About the Study
El Camino Real is a well-used corridor that goes through much of San Mateo County. It is critical for those going north-south between San Jose and San Francisco and has many important connections to retail centers. Every year, people are killed or seriously injured on El Camino Real due to speeding, running red lights, and other factors that put other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians at risk. The City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG) is conducting the San Bruno-Millbrae El Camino Real Multimodal Improvement Study (Study) to determine how accessibility, safety, and connectivity may be improved for people walking, biking, driving and using transit.
Project Timeline
– Phase 1 (Fall-Winter 2025): Learn about the project and share your current experience and transportation needs along the corridor.
– Phase 2 (Spring 2026): First viewing and opportunity to comment on draft concepts/alternatives based off traffic and parking analysis. Your comments will inform staff on the selection of a preferred concept/alternative.
– Phase 3A (Summer 2026): Review the preferred alternative and share your input.
– Phase 3B (Winter 2026): Learn about the final proposal option and next steps based on data analysis and your feedback.
Study Goals
The goal of the Study is to develop and prioritize short-term, quick-build projects that improve safety and connectivity along El Camino Real. These near-term improvements will be based on data, technical analysis, and community input.
Once the study is complete, the cities of San Bruno and Millbrae will be able to use the recommendations to guide future investments and long-term corridor enhancements.
How to Get Involved
The Study will use community input to help define current transportation safety challenges, as well as define and prioritize projects to address them.

Take the Community Survey
This first community survey will ask you about your current travel behaviors and transportation safety challenges you experience on El Camino Real in San Bruno and Millbrae, as well as when you use El Camino Real to go to, from or through these cities.
Your participation in the following survey will be used to identify transportation needs and help develop potential alternatives to address them.
Join the Virtual Kick-Off Meeting
On December 4 at 6 p.m., the Study team will host a virtual kick-off meeting where you can learn more about this effort, ask the team questions, and share your experience with transportation safety challenges while travelling on El Camino Real. Five attendees will be randomly selected to receive a $25 gift card!
